“We need a trusted record of what happened,” Senator Schumer said.
A bill that would have created an independent commission to investigate the events of January 6 when demonstrators illegally entered the Capitol in Washington, D.C., was derailed by partisan senators. The bill would have needed 60 votes to pass in the Senate and the final vote was 54-35. The proposal had previously passed in the House.
Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said before the vote, “We have to investigate, expose and report the truth. We need to establish a trusted record of what really transpired on January the 6th and the events that preceded it.”
Also ahead of the vote, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said, “I’ll continue to support the real, serious work of our criminal justice system and our own Senate committees. And I’ll continue to urge my colleagues to oppose this extraneous layer when the time comes for the Senate to vote.”
